Case study - Nikki C. - South Devon
Nikki’s workspace felt bland and uninspiring. She even got to the point where she opted to work from her kitchen table rather than from her spare bedroom which had actually been set up as a home office, to enable her to be more efficient, away from any distraction in her home.
Following a family holiday in Crete, and a sun-drenched photograph of Chania, Nikki had in mind to redecorate her home office by drawing on the restorative power of the Mediterranean.
6 months later, nothing had happened and Nikki could feel the impact on her productivity. She was craving a place of genuine calm and focus.
When I met Nikki, she had so many ideas and was really struggling to pick a direction, which was preventing her from getting started with this transformation. After discussing the client’s lifestyle, sensory preferences, energy and stress levels, we built a strong vision of what Nikki was aiming for: to blend the calm of the Aegean sea with the focused energy of a modern office using multi-sensory, sustainable design principles.
The challenge here was to balance holiday calm with productivity. The client needed the best of both worlds: a
dynamic space that shifts from calm focus in the morning to high energy and inspiration for creative afternoon tasks.
"I just could not see the wood for the trees. I kept switching from one task to the next, seeing to household chores in the middle of it all, wasting a lot of time and feeling really annoyed with myself as I felt incapable to concentrate.”

Design strategy & Colour psychology
To bring in calm and focus, the colour palette took inspiration from the sea: Venetian-style plastered walls in warm sand hues to ground the room.
Teal's blue-green tones are proven to reduce stress and promote mental clarity, making it ideal for sustained concentration; mustard brings the psychological warmth and optimism of yellow without the overstimulation that brighter shades can trigger; while terracotta grounds the scheme with an earthy, stabilising energy that keeps the nervous system settled during long working hours.
For energy and inspiration, pops of terracotta, sun-drenched ochre, and Bougainvillea pink could be strategically placed within the direct line of sight from the desk to stimulate creativity and alertness.
The Multi-sensory and Sustainable process
Biodynamic LED circadian lighting that mimics the Cretan sun, shifting from bright morning light to warm golden-hour hues was specified to support sight. Pendant lighting moves away from the harsh overhead glare that drains focus, in favour of warm pools of light that signal safety and ease to the body.
Sustainable cork flooring, reclaimed olive wood desk surfaces, and organic Cretan linen window treatments helped with sound insulation and touch, a sense often underestimated when we think about workspaces, together with our sense of scent. But a hidden acoustic wall panel made of preserved moss to damp echo, paired with a subtle, non-toxic diffuser emitting notes of wild thyme, sea salt, and citrus could for sure take Nikki straight back to the Mediterranean while keeping her engaged in her work.
A 3-D rug mimicking Crete sandy beaches, woven cotton baskets and wooden furniture introduce biophilic texture: our brains are neurologically wired to find comfort in natural materials, lowering cortisol and fostering a sense of order without sterility.
Finally, living plants and herbs complete the picture: studies consistently show that greenery improves air quality, lifts mood and sharpens concentration, while fragrant herbs like rosemary and mint offer gentle, natural cognitive support throughout the working day.
Together, these elements create a workspace that doesn't just look beautiful — it actively works for you.
